Playing the Long Game

I'm trying to play the long game. However, as I sit at my desk all day long, I want things to move faster. I want success quicker. I've come to realize that playing the long game is hard due to the fact that I'm not patient. Well, I think patience is hard for most people, not just me.

If you're new here, you may wonder what my ultimate plan is. Well, here is the TL/DR version:

  • Build (and potentially buy) 1-3 companies per year. Based on our historical success rate, I assume that one of the businesses we start per year will end up working. The others will be sold or shut-down.
  • In 10 years, I want to be at a retreat in Hawaii with the CEOs of these businesses.

I'm in the early years of this strategy and I often find myself getting discouraged. The voice in my head tells me "you're thinking too small" or "you're moving too slow." However, every time these voices pop into my head and I question if I'm playing the right game, I look at the chart below.

What does this chart show you? If you start just one profitable business per year, and grow it over the long-term, your results will be exceptional. Is this better than starting just one big business? Probably not, but I think it's a more achievable and diversified approach. Not to mention, it suits me better.

Everyone reading this has different goals. That's what makes the world fun. If you find yourself questioning why you chose the path you're on, I'd encourage you to find a token that reminds you to stay on that path. What's your token? I'd love to see it.
